Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall B
ValueB- NeedB TradesB- FutureA-
The Steelers won the night they stopped Dixon from sliding. Grade: B.

Call it larceny. Johnny Dixon sat on the board until pick No. 202, and the Steelers did not need to be asked twice. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.

The Boyd pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

They will answer for taking offensive lineman early while quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots went begging. Job largely done: safety settled and 5 of 9 of the wish list covered.

Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.

Pick Analysis
Pick30 Rnd1 Darius Robinson
In the 30th overall pick they get a double-digit-sack hope at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick51 Rnd2 Junior Colson
They took Junior Colson at par in pick No. 51, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick62 Rnd2 Zach Frazier
They paid sticker price for Zach Frazier in No. 62, and that is fine. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick102 Rnd4 Brenden Rice
Fair-plus on Brenden Rice, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick120 Rnd4 Javon Foster
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Javon Foster adds an offensive lineman and leaves quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots untouched.
Pick121 Rnd4 Andru Phillips
Nothing to complain about; Andru Phillips went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick129 Rnd4 Christian Jones
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending pick 129 on Christian Jones with quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots unsolved.
Pick131 Rnd4 Josh Newton
Josh Newton in Round 4, Pick 31 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick140 Rnd5 Johnny Wilson
They read the board right and Johnny Wilson was the payoff at pick No. 140. The roster fit checks out.
Pick160 Rnd5 Khristian Boyd
They reached a country mile for Khristian Boyd at the 160th overall pick, and the board is aghast. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick165 Rnd5 Malik Mustapha
Malik Mustapha slid further than he should have, and No. 165 is lovely value for the safety. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick197 Rnd6 M.J. Devonshire
A slide stopped in pick 197, with M.J. Devonshire worth more than the price. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick202 Rnd6 Johnny Dixon
Johnny Dixon at Round 6, Pick 27 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick238 Rnd7 Michael Barrett
Steal is underselling it; Michael Barrett at the Round 7 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick247 Rnd7 Trevin Wallace
Trevin Wallace slipping to the 247th pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
