Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall C
ValueB NeedB TradesF FutureA+
The Steelers won the night they stopped Hardy from sliding. Grade: C.

You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Steelers did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. Call it a C and check back in two years.

The Hardy value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. They will need Bortolini to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer.

It nets out as a middle-of-the-pack haul that neither helps nor hurts much.

Pick Analysis
Pick51 Rnd2 Payton Wilson
Nice patience on Payton Wilson, who had no business lasting to the Round 2 slot. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick84 Rnd3 Jaden Hicks
Jaden Hicks slipping to No. 84 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick120 Rnd4 Brenden Rice
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Brenden Rice in Round 4, Pick 20, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick121 Rnd4 Javon Foster
They paid sticker price for Javon Foster in pick 121, and that is fine. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick134 Rnd4 Andru Phillips
Andru Phillips slid further than he should have, and pick No. 134 is lovely value for the cornerback. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick172 Rnd5 Khristian Boyd
By-the-book stuff, Khristian Boyd at the 172nd overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick180 Rnd6 M.J. Devonshire
No drama and no debate, M.J. Devonshire went about where he belonged in the 180th overall pick. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick197 Rnd6 Tanor Bortolini
This one needs a full-page explanation: Tanor Bortolini in pick No. 197, miles early. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick222 Rnd7 Daequan Hardy
They will replay Daequan Hardy at Round 7, Pick 2 for years; that is how good the value is. The roster fit checks out.
Pick238 Rnd7 Trevin Wallace
A straight-up fair deal on Trevin Wallace at slot 238, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick241 Rnd7 Josh Proctor
Josh Proctor in pick 241 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
