Good, not great, for the 49ers: B-. The 49ers did not so much draft LaJohntay Wester as overpay for him, 121 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Judkins. The tight end hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The roster is better shaped than it was, with offensive lineman chief among the fixes.
Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Will Campbell
They paid sticker price for Will Campbell in the 11th pick, and that is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick51
Rnd2
Donovan Jackson
They talked themselves into Donovan Jackson at the 51st overall pick, and the board did not agree. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick75
Rnd3
Alfred Collins
Taking Alfred Collins in pick 75 is close to grand larceny; an interior defensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick85
Rnd3
Malachi Moore
A premium they did not need to pay, Malachi Moore a notch or two before his time. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick99
Rnd3
Jihaad Campbell
Somehow Jihaad Campbell was still sitting there in No. 99, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick112
Rnd4
LaJohntay Wester
This one needs a full-page explanation: LaJohntay Wester in pick No. 112, miles early. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick138
Rnd4
Quinshon Judkins
The board fumbled Quinshon Judkins all the way to the 138th overall pick, and they scooped it up. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick139
Rnd4
JJ Pegues
JJ Pegues at pick 139 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick189
Rnd6
Andres Borregales
Steal is underselling it; Andres Borregales at the 189th pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick228
Rnd7
Shilo Sanders
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Shilo Sanders well ahead of where he belonged. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick232
Rnd7
Jimmy Horn Jr.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jimmy Horn Jr.. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick255
Rnd7
DJ Uiagalelei
DJ Uiagalelei in Round 7, Pick 37 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It fills a real need, too.
