Draft Grade — Browns
Overall
D
ValueC
NeedB+
TradesF
FutureB+
The Browns bet the future on Ewers. The board says D. The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Browns reached some 62 spots for Elic Ayomanor, and value like that does not grow back. A D that will need time and luck to look better.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. So much rides on Quinn Ewers that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. The Watts value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick Analysis
Pick2
Rnd1
Quinn Ewers
In No. 2 they get a long-term answer under center. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick28
Rnd1
Josh Conerly Jr.
In slot 28 they get a plug-and-play piece up front at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick33
Rnd2
Abdul Carter
A conviction pick on Abdul Carter at the Round 2 slot that the board grades a round light. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick43
Rnd2
Elic Ayomanor
A big swing on Elic Ayomanor at pick No. 43, well ahead of any board in the building. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick60
Rnd2
Xavier Watts
Xavier Watts at Round 2, Pick 28 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick69
Rnd3
Riley Mahlman
They left a pile of value on the table to take Riley Mahlman this early at the 69th pick. The roster fit checks out.
Pick78
Rnd3
Tyler Warren
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Tyler Warren well ahead of where he belonged. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick90
Rnd3
Smael Mondon Jr.
Smael Mondon Jr. at slot 90 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick104
Rnd4
Tyleik Williams
Tyleik Williams at pick 104 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It fills a real need, too.
Pick117
Rnd4
Daylen Everette
Good price on Daylen Everette in the 117th overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick165
Rnd5
Tez Johnson
By-the-book stuff, Tez Johnson at pick No. 165 squarely in line with his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick176
Rnd6
Jermari Harris
Jermari Harris at the 176th pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick188
Rnd6
Jimmy Horn Jr.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jimmy Horn Jr.. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick203
Rnd6
Terion Stewart
A wild overpay on Terion Stewart in No. 203, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick207
Rnd6
Anthony Belton
Anthony Belton at the 207th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick252
Rnd7
Cody Simon
They jumped the gun on Cody Simon, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick253
Rnd7
Alfred Collins
They reached a country mile for Alfred Collins at the Round 7 slot, and the board is aghast. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
