FutureD-
The Browns bet the future on Milroe. The board says F. Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Browns spent Round 3, Pick 34 on Emery Jones Jr., a name most had 101 spots down the list. About as rough as the board gets, and a F to prove it.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Walker. The trades bled value they could not afford to lose.
Jalen Milroe is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. A whole weekend of picks and tight end is somehow still a want.
They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
The verdict is harsh because the weekend was, and there is little to argue.
Pick Analysis
Pick4
Rnd1
Ashton Jeanty
In the 4th overall pick they get a three-down runner. A real need, handled.
Pick8
Rnd1
Jalen Milroe
In the 8th pick they get the arm they will build around, a steep price for the projection. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick72
Rnd3
Denzel Burke
A straight-up fair deal on Denzel Burke at slot 72, value and slot in agreement. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick94
Rnd3
Evan Stewart
They went early on Evan Stewart in the Round 3 slot, and the value did not follow. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick98
Rnd3
Emery Jones Jr.
Emery Jones Jr. at No. 98 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick99
Rnd3
Donovan Jackson
This one needs a full-page explanation: Donovan Jackson in Round 3, Pick 35, miles early. It fills a real need, too.
Pick109
Rnd4
JT Tuimoloau
JT Tuimoloau in Round 4, Pick 8 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick168
Rnd5
Tonka Hemingway
Tonka Hemingway at the 168th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick184
Rnd6
Will Howard
Will Howard in slot 184 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick189
Rnd6
Tristan Leigh
They reached a country mile for Tristan Leigh at pick 189, and the board is aghast. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick204
Rnd6
Jalon Walker
Taking Jalon Walker in pick No. 204 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick213
Rnd6
Rod Moore
They did well to land Rod Moore in the Round 6 slot, just ahead of his grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick215
Rnd7
Kyren Lacy
Value said wait; Kyren Lacy in No. 215 says they were not listening. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
