The Lions let Watson fall into their laps, and walked away with a B. You could see the war room lean forward. Nathaniel Watson at pick No. 251 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did.
Leaving safety unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same.
Cornerback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
Bralen Trice
In pick 30 they get a premier pass rusher, and a steal at that. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick38
Rnd2
Quinyon Mitchell
Quinyon Mitchell at Round 2, Pick 6 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick73
Rnd3
Christian Haynes
No drama and no debate, Christian Haynes went about where he belonged in No. 73. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick93
Rnd3
Roman Wilson
A quiet steal in slot 93: Roman Wilson for less than the market said. The roster fit checks out.
Pick167
Rnd5
Roger Rosengarten
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Roger Rosengarten. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick251
Rnd7
Nathaniel Watson
A linebacker of that caliber at the 251st overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. It fills a real need, too.
