Draft Grade — Buccaneers

NeedB-

FutureB-
The Buccaneers fleeced the room on the phones and earned a B. You could see the war room lean forward. Ja'Quinden Jackson at slot 224 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
Reaching for Robinson left real value on the table behind him. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck.
A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. With quarterback unsolved, spending premium capital on linebacker is the choice that costs them.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick69
Rnd3
Sonny Styles
Taking Sonny Styles in the 69th overall pick is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick74
Rnd3
Kenneth Grant
Kenneth Grant at No. 74 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the interior defensive lineman. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick98
Rnd3
Que Robinson
Que Robinson at pick 98 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick99
Rnd3
Jack Bech
Jack Bech at the Round 3 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick105
Rnd4
Chris Paul Jr.
They paid up for Chris Paul Jr. at pick No. 105 when waiting would have done the job. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick116
Rnd4
Tyler Warren
They barely believed it either: Tyler Warren still on the board at No. 116. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick117
Rnd4
Dane Key
They talked themselves into Dane Key at the 117th overall pick, and the board did not agree. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick130
Rnd4
Jay Higgins
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Jay Higgins adds a linebacker and leaves quarterback untouched.
Pick131
Rnd4
Benjamin Morrison
This one needs a full-page explanation: Benjamin Morrison in Round 4, Pick 30, miles early. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick133
Rnd4
DeMonte Capehart
A conviction pick on DeMonte Capehart at slot 133 that the board grades a round light. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick140
Rnd5
Ar'maj Reed-Adams
A real head-scratcher, Ar'maj Reed-Adams in pick 140 is miles ahead of his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick142
Rnd5
Brandon Crenshaw-Dickson
They reached a country mile for Brandon Crenshaw-Dickson at the 142nd pick, and the board is aghast. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick152
Rnd5
Harold Perkins Jr.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Harold Perkins Jr. in No. 152, plain and simple. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick153
Rnd5
Jordan Hancock
Jordan Hancock in pick No. 153 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick156
Rnd5
Barion Brown
Barion Brown at the Round 5 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick166
Rnd5
Cobee Bryant
No edge and no loss on Cobee Bryant in slot 166; it is a wash and a sensible one. It fills a real need, too.
Pick203
Rnd6
Jihaad Campbell
They robbed the room for Jihaad Campbell here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick212
Rnd6
Kevin Winston Jr.
A tidy little value on Kevin Winston Jr. in the 212th overall pick, a step better than break-even. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick216
Rnd7
Jaishawn Barham
Jaishawn Barham at the 216th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick218
Rnd7
Joey Slackman
Joey Slackman in the Round 7 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick220
Rnd7
Jonah Monheim
They will replay Jonah Monheim at No. 220 for years; that is how good the value is. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick224
Rnd7
Ja'Quinden Jackson
A running back of that caliber at pick No. 224 is the definition of value, full stop. The roster fit checks out.
Pick225
Rnd7
Garrett Dellinger
A wild overpay on Garrett Dellinger in slot 225, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick228
Rnd7
Jamon Dumas-Johnson
You do not let a linebacker like Jamon Dumas-Johnson reach the 228th pick and blink. They did not. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick238
Rnd7
Hunter Wohler
Steal is underselling it; Hunter Wohler at pick 238 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick244
Rnd7
J.J. Weaver
A big swing on J.J. Weaver at Round 7, Pick 30, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
