Draft Grade — Buccaneers
Overall
B-
ValueC+

FutureB-
The Buccaneers let Higgins fall and pounced. Final grade: B-. Call it larceny. Jay Higgins sat on the board until No. 208, and the Buccaneers did not need to be asked twice.
Reaching for Reed-Adams left real value on the table behind him. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The veteran additions, DaRon Bland chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.
On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with interior defensive lineman the one that mattered most.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
Mason Graham
In Round 1, Pick 20 they get a run-stuffing presence up front, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick40
Rnd2
Zy Alexander
Zy Alexander at No. 40 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick89
Rnd3
Jack Bech
They jumped the gun on Jack Bech, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick90
Rnd3
Ozzy Trapilo
A real head-scratcher, Ozzy Trapilo in pick 90 is miles ahead of his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick106
Rnd4
Maxwell Hairston
A clean, defensible pick in slot 106 with a little surplus value in Maxwell Hairston. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick113
Rnd4
Rylie Mills
Rylie Mills in the 113th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick125
Rnd4
Jake Slaughter
Jake Slaughter in pick No. 125 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick126
Rnd4
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
They reached a country mile for Dont'e Thornton Jr. at the Round 4 slot, and the board is aghast. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick128
Rnd4
Sonny Styles
Sonny Styles in slot 128 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick134
Rnd4
Ar'maj Reed-Adams
Ar'maj Reed-Adams at No. 134 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick135
Rnd4
Chris Paul Jr.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Chris Paul Jr. in the 135th overall pick. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick136
Rnd4
Cobee Bryant
Cobee Bryant at pick No. 136 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It fills a real need, too.
Pick148
Rnd5
Cody Simon
The board fumbled Cody Simon all the way to the Round 5 slot, and they scooped it up. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick153
Rnd5
Kevin Winston Jr.
Kevin Winston Jr. in the 153rd pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick154
Rnd5
Jordan Hancock
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jordan Hancock this early at pick 154. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick155
Rnd5
Miles Frazier
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Miles Frazier. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick174
Rnd5
Fernando Carmona
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Fernando Carmona well ahead of where he belonged. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick175
Rnd5
Harold Perkins Jr.
Harold Perkins Jr. in pick No. 175 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick183
Rnd6
Clay Webb
Value said wait; Clay Webb in the 183rd pick says they were not listening. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick208
Rnd6
Jay Higgins
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Jay Higgins in the Round 6 slot, plain and simple. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick211
Rnd6
Luke Lachey
They reached into another round for Luke Lachey, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick236
Rnd7
Ja'Quinden Jackson
They will replay Ja'Quinden Jackson at slot 236 for years; that is how good the value is. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
