Larceny in pick 224 lands the Buccaneers a A-, Awls and all. Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Braden Awls got past him. The Buccaneers do not have to explain a thing at the 224th pick. One of the weekend's best, top to bottom, and a A- to show for it.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. Reaching for Harris left real value on the table behind him. It is not that Cole is a bad player; it is that the Buccaneers had louder needs to answer first.
The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
A strong weekend's work, and a rare one to find this little fault with.
Pick Analysis
Pick39
Rnd2
Will Echoles
They will replay Will Echoles at slot 39 for years; that is how good the value is. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick41
Rnd2
Chris Cole
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Chris Cole at linebacker with edge rusher and running back open.
Pick47
Rnd2
Kelley Jones
Kelley Jones at the Round 2 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick56
Rnd2
Kade Pieper
Kade Pieper slipping to the 56th overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick77
Rnd3
Greg Johnson
Greg Johnson at the 77th pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick80
Rnd3
Reed Harris
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending Round 3, Pick 16 on Reed Harris with edge rusher and running back unsolved.
Pick104
Rnd4
Peter Clarke
A premium they did not need to pay, Peter Clarke a notch or two before his time. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick141
Rnd5
Drake Lindsey
They paid up for Drake Lindsey at pick No. 141 when waiting would have done the job. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick181
Rnd6
Elijah Paige
Elijah Paige in Round 6, Pick 3 lands just on the right side of the ledger. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick224
Rnd7
Braden Awls
Braden Awls in the 224th overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Where it fits the depth chart is the real question.
