Quarterback settled, Ward in the fold, and a D for the 49ers. The 49ers went off the board in a big way for J.J. Weaver, 102 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another. Hard to defend, and the D reflects that.
Henderson at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere.
The whole projection now runs through Cam Ward; hit there and everything else looks smarter.
In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
Pick Analysis
Pick3
Rnd1
Cam Ward
In pick 3 they get a long-term answer under center at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick13
Rnd1
Will Campbell
In the Round 1 slot they get a blindside protector, reach and all. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick27
Rnd1
Nick Emmanwori
In the 27th overall pick they get a centerfielder for the defense, outstanding value to boot.
Pick33
Rnd2
Xavier Restrepo
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 33, where Xavier Restrepo graded well above the range. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick48
Rnd2
Nic Scourton
The board had cheaper options than Nic Scourton at the 48th pick, and it noticed. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick65
Rnd3
Trey Amos
Trey Amos at slot 65 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick79
Rnd3
Jake Majors
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Jake Majors at slot 79 is the proof. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick101
Rnd3
Tyler Warren
They barely believed it either: Tyler Warren still on the board at Round 3, Pick 37. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick115
Rnd4
Alfred Collins
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Alfred Collins at No. 115. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick137
Rnd4
Nicholas Singleton
Nicholas Singleton in the Round 4 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick163
Rnd5
Chris Paul Jr.
Chris Paul Jr. at the 163rd overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick192
Rnd6
Jihaad Campbell
Steal is underselling it; Jihaad Campbell at pick 192 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick193
Rnd6
TreVeyon Henderson
TreVeyon Henderson in the 193rd pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick202
Rnd6
Jordan Hancock
A safety of that caliber at pick No. 202 is the definition of value, full stop. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick234
Rnd7
Jared Wilson
They will replay Jared Wilson at Round 7, Pick 20 for years; that is how good the value is. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick247
Rnd7
Jonah Monheim
Jonah Monheim at the Round 7 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick249
Rnd7
Joey Slackman
Joey Slackman at No. 249 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick250
Rnd7
Jaylin Noel
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jaylin Noel well ahead of where he belonged. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick254
Rnd7
J.J. Weaver
J.J. Weaver at pick 254 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The roster fit checks out.
