FutureA
The 49ers finally solved quarterback, and it carried them to a D. The rest of the league will want that one back. Ollie Gordon II tumbling to the 49ers in the Round 7 slot is a gift they did not have to think twice about. Too much went sideways, and the D is the honest tally.
They will need Griffith to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. So much rides on Cam Ward that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Cam Ward
In the Round 1 slot they get the arm they will build around. A real need, handled.
Pick17
Rnd1
Jahdae Barron
They did well to land Jahdae Barron in slot 17, just ahead of his grade. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick28
Rnd1
Jack Sawyer
In pick No. 28 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick75
Rnd3
Tyleik Williams
Tyleik Williams at the 75th pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick99
Rnd3
Jake Majors
A slide stopped in Round 3, Pick 35, with Jake Majors worth more than the price. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick111
Rnd4
Logan Brown
Logan Brown in pick 111 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick117
Rnd4
Mason Taylor
Mason Taylor in No. 117 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick185
Rnd6
Cody Simon
A linebacker of that caliber at slot 185 is the definition of value, full stop. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick226
Rnd7
Thor Griffith
Thor Griffith at the Round 7 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick230
Rnd7
Garrett Dellinger
Garrett Dellinger at the 230th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick249
Rnd7
Ollie Gordon II
Ollie Gordon II in No. 249 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick255
Rnd7
Elijhah Badger
They paid sticker price for Elijhah Badger in the 255th pick, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
