FutureB-
The 49ers bet the future on Sanders. The board says D. Somebody in the Round 7 slot was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The 49ers sat still while Jonah Coleman, the No. 150 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D is the result.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. The cost of the Slackman reach is exactly the players who went right after him.
They have staked the next five years on Shedeur Sanders, which is the only story that really matters here. On the needs board they went 8 of 8, with offensive lineman the one that mattered most.
In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
Pick Analysis
Pick2
Rnd1
Shedeur Sanders
In the 2nd pick they get the face of the franchise. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick10
Rnd1
Wyatt Milum
They took Wyatt Milum at par in the 10th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick17
Rnd1
Walter Nolen
Walter Nolen at slot 17 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick33
Rnd2
Xavier Restrepo
Xavier Restrepo at No. 33 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick48
Rnd2
Nic Scourton
Nic Scourton at pick No. 48 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It fills a real need, too.
Pick79
Rnd3
Tyler Booker
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Tyler Booker in the 79th pick, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick101
Rnd3
Jake Majors
Taking Jake Majors in the 101st overall pick is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick115
Rnd4
Tyler Warren
They barely believed it either: Tyler Warren still on the board at pick 115. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick137
Rnd4
Kaleb Johnson
Kaleb Johnson in the Round 4 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick192
Rnd6
Jordan Hancock
Somehow Jordan Hancock was still sitting there in Round 6, Pick 17, and they pounced on premier safety value. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick234
Rnd7
Jaishawn Barham
You do not let a linebacker like Jaishawn Barham reach pick 234 and blink. They did not. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick247
Rnd7
Jonah Monheim
Jonah Monheim at No. 247 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick249
Rnd7
Jonah Coleman
A running back of that caliber at Round 7, Pick 35 is the definition of value, full stop. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick254
Rnd7
Joey Slackman
Joey Slackman at the 254th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
