Grand theft in pick 235: the 49ers steal Coleman and grade out a D. This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: Jonah Coleman, the No. 141 name on the board, stolen at the 235th overall pick. Hard to defend, and the D reflects that.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. The 49ers indulged a want in Moore while a need in quarterback and linebacker stayed open. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
The Bernard reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, quarterback very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick17
Rnd1
Tre Harris
In pick No. 17 they get a matchup problem out wide at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick21
Rnd1
Princely Umanmielen
In the Round 1 slot they get a premier pass rusher. A real need, handled.
Pick33
Rnd2
Nick Emmanwori
Nick Emmanwori at the 33rd overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick58
Rnd2
Malachi Moore
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback and linebacker to take Malachi Moore, a safety that was not the priority.
Pick79
Rnd3
Dylan Fairchild
They will replay Dylan Fairchild at No. 79 for years; that is how good the value is. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick101
Rnd3
Ajani Cornelius
No drama and no debate, Ajani Cornelius went about where he belonged in the 101st pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick115
Rnd4
Deone Walker
No edge and no loss on Deone Walker in pick 115; it is a wash and a sensible one. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick192
Rnd6
Bryce Foster
Bryce Foster in slot 192 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick235
Rnd7
Jonah Coleman
Steal is underselling it; Jonah Coleman at slot 235 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick248
Rnd7
Jack Velling
Nothing to complain about; Jack Velling went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick250
Rnd7
Shilo Sanders
They let Shilo Sanders come to them and pounced at the 250th overall pick. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick255
Rnd7
Germie Bernard
A conviction pick on Germie Bernard at the 255th pick that the board grades a round light. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
