Draft Grade — Packers
Overall
B
ValueC+
NeedB-
TradesA+
FutureB-
The Packers fleeced the room on the phones and earned a B. The Packers torched the value chart for Braelon Allen, taking him 61 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted. More right than wrong, and a B to match.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. The Bullard pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at quarterback and tight end.
For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick36
Rnd2
Kamren Kinchens
They paid sticker price for Kamren Kinchens in the Round 2 slot, and that is fine. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick41
Rnd2
Tyler Guyton
Tyler Guyton in Round 2, Pick 9 is fair value, right on his grade. The roster fit checks out.
Pick43
Rnd2
Chop Robinson
A clean, defensible pick in No. 43 with a little surplus value in Chop Robinson. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick48
Rnd2
Edgerrin Cooper
Edgerrin Cooper in pick No. 48 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick52
Rnd2
Trey Benson
Value said wait; Trey Benson in pick 52 says they were not listening. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick64
Rnd2
Javon Bullard
A curious use of slot 64. Quarterback and tight end needed the pick; a safety in Javon Bullard did not.
Pick65
Rnd3
Christian Haynes
Christian Haynes in pick No. 65 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick67
Rnd3
Blake Corum
Blake Corum at Round 3, Pick 3 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick68
Rnd3
Junior Colson
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Junior Colson adds a linebacker and leaves quarterback and tight end untouched.
Pick69
Rnd3
Sedrick Van Pran
They reached into another round for Sedrick Van Pran, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick70
Rnd3
Johnny Wilson
Johnny Wilson at No. 70 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick71
Rnd3
Maason Smith
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback and tight end to take Maason Smith, a DT-EDGE that was not the priority.
Pick79
Rnd3
Caelen Carson
Value with a capital V on Caelen Carson in the 79th overall pick, a genuine coup. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick88
Rnd3
Cade Stover
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Cade Stover at TE-EDGE with quarterback and tight end open.
Pick94
Rnd3
Braelon Allen
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Braelon Allen. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick95
Rnd3
McKinnley Jackson
McKinnley Jackson in the 95th overall pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick106
Rnd4
Dominick Puni
Nothing to complain about; Dominick Puni went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick119
Rnd4
Darius Robinson
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Darius Robinson. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
