Some picks age like wine; Storm Duck at pick No. 230 will need to, sitting 94 spots clear of his grade. The math is unkind, and the D- follows.

Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. Whatever Caleb Williams becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. It is not that Melton is a bad player; it is that the Vikings had louder needs to answer first.

That safety hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. That Smith-Wade pick is the receipt they will wave around later. Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.
