FutureA
Nobody dealt better than the Cardinals this weekend: B+. The Cardinals went off the board in a big way for Gabe Hall, 59 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another.
They banked enough surplus on Milton III to cover a lot of smaller sins. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick Analysis
Pick21
Rnd1
Brian Thomas Jr.
In No. 21 they get a home-run threat at receiver at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick25
Rnd1
JC Latham
In the 25th pick they get a blindside protector, outstanding value to boot. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick27
Rnd1
Ennis Rakestraw Jr.
In pick 27 they get a potential shutdown corner, though they paid up to get him.
Pick41
Rnd2
Chop Robinson
Circle this one: Chop Robinson at pick No. 41 is a fall that decides a draft. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick46
Rnd2
Chris Braswell
Chris Braswell in slot 46 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick66
Rnd3
Braden Fiske
Braden Fiske at the 66th overall pick is money in the bank, a interior defensive lineman taken below his worth. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick75
Rnd3
Malachi Corley
Malachi Corley is a better player than the Round 3 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick81
Rnd3
Christian Haynes
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Christian Haynes in Round 3, Pick 17. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick84
Rnd3
Renardo Green
Renardo Green at pick 84 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the safety. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick88
Rnd3
Max Melton
The board had Max Melton higher than the 88th pick, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick90
Rnd3
Sedrick Van Pran
You do not let an offensive lineman like Sedrick Van Pran reach pick No. 90 and blink. They did not. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick91
Rnd3
Maason Smith
Maason Smith in the 91st overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick96
Rnd3
Brandon Dorlus
Value with a capital V on Brandon Dorlus in slot 96, a genuine coup. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick104
Rnd4
Blake Fisher
A conviction pick on Blake Fisher at No. 104 that the board grades a round light. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick108
Rnd4
Dadrion Taylor-Demerson
Taking Dadrion Taylor-Demerson in slot 108 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick122
Rnd4
Ben Sinnott
No edge and no loss on Ben Sinnott in No. 122; it is a wash and a sensible one. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick126
Rnd4
Isaac Guerendo
They paid sticker price for Isaac Guerendo in the 126th overall pick, and that is fine. It fills a real need, too.
Pick138
Rnd5
Trevor Keegan
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Trevor Keegan. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick158
Rnd5
Justin Eboigbe
A slide stopped in pick 158, with Justin Eboigbe worth more than the price. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick162
Rnd5
Gabe Hall
They talked themselves into Gabe Hall at Round 5, Pick 26, and the board did not agree. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick169
Rnd5
Brandon Coleman
A premium they did not need to pay, Brandon Coleman a notch or two before his time. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick177
Rnd6
Tanor Bortolini
Tanor Bortolini in the 177th pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick179
Rnd6
Layden Robinson
Layden Robinson at No. 179 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick184
Rnd6
Tahj Washington
Tahj Washington at slot 184 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick186
Rnd6
Grayson Murphy
They let Grayson Murphy come to them and pounced at pick No. 186. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick198
Rnd6
Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint
A tidy little value on Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint in the 198th pick, a step better than break-even. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick202
Rnd6
Kimani Vidal
Kimani Vidal at pick 202 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The roster fit checks out.
Pick219
Rnd6
Logan Lee
Logan Lee in the 219th overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick226
Rnd7
Javontae Jean-Baptiste
Javontae Jean-Baptiste slid further than he should have, and the Round 7 slot is lovely value for the edge rusher. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick234
Rnd7
Edefuan Ulofoshio
No drama and no debate, Edefuan Ulofoshio went about where he belonged in Round 7, Pick 14. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick236
Rnd7
Andrew Coker
Value said wait; Andrew Coker in the 236th pick says they were not listening. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick245
Rnd7
Joe Milton III
Joe Milton III in the 245th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick255
Rnd7
Jawhar Jordan
Jawhar Jordan at Round 7, Pick 35 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
