Draft Grade — Cardinals
Overall
A-
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesA+
FutureA+
The Cardinals won the night they stopped DeJean from sliding. Grade: A-. Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Cooper DeJean got past him. The Cardinals do not have to explain a thing at slot 93. This is how you run a draft, and the A- reflects it.
The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. They will answer for taking cornerback early while running back and tight end went begging. Reaching for Cowing left real value on the table behind him.
The running back hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
In the end it comes back to Bralen Trice, and a haul good enough to build on right away.
Pick Analysis
Pick17
Rnd1
Bralen Trice
In slot 17 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick30
Rnd1
T'Vondre Sweat
In pick No. 30 they get a load in the middle. A real need, handled.
Pick35
Rnd2
Nate Wiggins
Nate Wiggins at pick 35 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick62
Rnd2
Tyler Guyton
They paid sticker price for Tyler Guyton in the 62nd overall pick, and that is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick67
Rnd3
Denzel Burke
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Denzel Burke adds a cornerback and leaves running back and tight end untouched.
Pick73
Rnd3
Jackson Powers-Johnson
Jackson Powers-Johnson at the Round 3 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick81
Rnd3
Christian Mahogany
By-the-book stuff, Christian Mahogany at Round 3, Pick 17 squarely in line with his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick93
Rnd3
Cooper DeJean
Of all the spots to shop, they chose cornerback. Cooper DeJean in the 93rd pick leaves running back and tight end for later.
Pick103
Rnd4
Devontez Walker
They took Devontez Walker at par in the 103rd overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick133
Rnd4
Jordan Travis
Jordan Travis in No. 133 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick140
Rnd5
Shemar Turner
Shemar Turner at slot 140 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick165
Rnd5
Jacob Cowing
Jacob Cowing in Round 5, Pick 29 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick224
Rnd7
Francisco Mauigoa
No drama and no debate, Francisco Mauigoa went about where he belonged in pick No. 224. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick227
Rnd7
Marques Cox
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Marques Cox in the Round 7 slot. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick251
Rnd7
Joshua Gray
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Joshua Gray at the 251st pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
