The Chargers answered their biggest question with McCarthy. Grade: D+. Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Chargers were there to profit. Dylan Laube, the No. 157 name on the board, should have been long gone before Round 7, Pick 5.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. The whole projection now runs through J.J. McCarthy; hit there and everything else looks smarter.
The McCarthy reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. The veteran additions, Kyle Hamilton chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.
Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.
