Draft Grade — Chargers
Overall B
ValueB NeedA- TradesB- FutureB-
The Chargers did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B.

The Chargers torched the value chart for Jaleel Johnson, taking him 62 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted.

They banked enough surplus on Pieper to cover a lot of smaller sins. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.

Pick Analysis
Pick1 Rnd1 Jeremiah Smith
In pick 1 they get a No. 1 receiver. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick33 Rnd2 Zabien Brown
Zabien Brown at the 33rd pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick65 Rnd3 A'Mauri Washington
A'Mauri Washington at the 65th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick100 Rnd3 Kade Pieper
Somehow Kade Pieper was still sitting there in No. 100, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. The roster fit checks out.
Pick115 Rnd4 Raylen Wilson
Raylen Wilson in Round 4, Pick 13 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick138 Rnd5 Brody Foley
A big swing on Brody Foley at the Round 5 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. It fills a real need, too.
Pick149 Rnd5 Amare Ferrell
Amare Ferrell in the 149th pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick222 Rnd7 Jaleel Johnson
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jaleel Johnson. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick235 Rnd7 Payton Pierce
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Payton Pierce at pick 235. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
