Draft Grade — Chargers
Overall
B+
ValueB
NeedC+
TradesA+
FutureB+
Grand theft in pick 73: the Chargers steal Scott and grade out a B+. This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: Justin Scott, the No. 21 name on the board, stolen at the Round 3 slot.
They will need Moore Jr. to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The phones were where this weekend was really won. The Chargers paired the rookies with proven help, Sauce Gardner leading the way.
It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Trevor Goosby
In the Round 1 slot they get protection for the quarterback. A real need, handled.
Pick33
Rnd2
Will Echoles
They barely believed it either: Will Echoles still on the board at the 33rd pick. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick42
Rnd2
Kewan Lacy
By-the-book stuff, Kewan Lacy at No. 42 squarely in line with his ranking. The roster logic is harder to follow.
Pick43
Rnd2
Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa
The board fumbled Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa all the way to slot 43, and they scooped it up. This was not a hole anyone had circled.
Pick67
Rnd3
David Stone
A interior defensive lineman of that caliber at Round 3, Pick 3 is the definition of value, full stop. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick73
Rnd3
Justin Scott
Justin Scott in pick 73 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick79
Rnd3
Princewill Umanmielen
A wild overpay on Princewill Umanmielen in the 79th overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick98
Rnd3
Devan Thompkins
They robbed the room for Devan Thompkins here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick103
Rnd4
Raleek Brown
Raleek Brown at the Round 4 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It fits a board better than it fits this team.
Pick110
Rnd4
Zeke Berry
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Zeke Berry at pick No. 110. A pick in search of a role on this roster.
Pick113
Rnd4
Josh Hoover
A straight-up fair deal on Josh Hoover at the 113th pick, value and slot in agreement. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick116
Rnd4
Williams Nwaneri
They left a pile of value on the table to take Williams Nwaneri this early at slot 116. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick119
Rnd4
Cooper Barkate
A conviction pick on Cooper Barkate at pick 119 that the board grades a round light. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick124
Rnd4
Earl Little Jr.
They took Earl Little Jr. at par in No. 124, which is nothing to complain about. The roster reasoning here is anyone's guess.
Pick134
Rnd4
Anthony Boswell
No edge and no loss on Anthony Boswell in the 134th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick139
Rnd5
Jalen Mayo
They paid sticker price for Jalen Mayo in Round 5, Pick 1, and that is fine. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick151
Rnd5
Justin Evans
Nothing to complain about; Justin Evans went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick160
Rnd5
Eli Bowen
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Eli Bowen. Hard to map this one onto the depth chart at all.
Pick171
Rnd5
Desmeal Leigh
A quiet steal in the 171st pick: Desmeal Leigh for less than the market said. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick172
Rnd5
Mateen Ibirogba
No drama and no debate, Mateen Ibirogba went about where he belonged in pick No. 172. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick200
Rnd6
Lawson Luckie
They liked Lawson Luckie enough to skip the value, taking him in Round 6, Pick 21. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick217
Rnd6
DeAndre Moore Jr.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for DeAndre Moore Jr.. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick223
Rnd7
Payton Pierce
Good price on Payton Pierce in slot 223, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Not a spot anyone had flagged, which makes it a head-scratcher.
Pick234
Rnd7
Jake Guarnera
They did well to land Jake Guarnera in the 234th overall pick, just ahead of his grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
