Draft Grade — Chargers

FutureB+
A costly weekend of dealing drags the Chargers to a D. The trade table was where it all came apart. The Chargers shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill.
The Mondon Jr. pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at quarterback and tight end. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Jackson has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, quarterback very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick4
Rnd1
Travis Hunter
In slot 4 they get an island corner at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick15
Rnd1
Harold Perkins Jr.
In Round 1, Pick 15 they get a coverage-and-run second-level piece. Need was not the driver here.
Pick23
Rnd1
Ollie Gordon II
In pick No. 23 they get a lead back with juice. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick55
Rnd2
Dani Dennis-Sutton
They let Dani Dennis-Sutton come to them and pounced at No. 55. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick56
Rnd2
Donovan Jackson
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Donovan Jackson. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick79
Rnd3
Tre Harris
Tre Harris at the 79th pick is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick111
Rnd4
Smael Mondon Jr.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Smael Mondon Jr. at linebacker with quarterback and tight end open.
Pick119
Rnd4
Josaiah Stewart
They paid a round early for Josaiah Stewart in pick 119, more than the board wanted. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick120
Rnd4
Rylie Mills
They took Rylie Mills at par in pick 120, which is nothing to complain about. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick140
Rnd5
TJ Ferguson
Fair-plus on TJ Ferguson, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick143
Rnd5
DJ Campbell
By-the-book stuff, DJ Campbell at the 143rd pick squarely in line with his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick162
Rnd6
Bryce Foster
Bryce Foster at Round 6, Pick 2 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick175
Rnd6
Moose Muhammad III
No edge and no loss on Moose Muhammad III in slot 175; it is a wash and a sensible one. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick207
Rnd7
Fentrell Cypress II
A straight-up fair deal on Fentrell Cypress II at pick No. 207, value and slot in agreement. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick209
Rnd7
Tim Smith
They liked Tim Smith enough to skip the value, taking him in No. 209. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
