Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall C+
ValueB NeedB+ TradesF FutureA+
The Commanders let James fall and pounced. Final grade: C+.

This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: DJ James, the No. 113 name on the board, stolen at slot 141. It lands right in the middle: a C+, no more, no less.

Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. The Foster pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.

That running back hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.

So much rides on Joe Alt that the real verdict is a season or two away.

Pick Analysis
Pick10 Rnd1 Joe Alt
In the 10th overall pick they get an anchor for the offensive line at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick36 Rnd2 Chop Robinson
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Chop Robinson. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick40 Rnd2 J.J. McCarthy
J.J. McCarthy in the 40th pick is fair value, right on his grade. It fills a real need, too.
Pick67 Rnd3 Ja'Tavion Sanders
Ja'Tavion Sanders is a better player than No. 67 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick72 Rnd3 Chris Braswell
Chris Braswell in Round 3, Pick 8 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick100 Rnd3 Johnny Wilson
They barely believed it either: Johnny Wilson still on the board at pick No. 100. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick102 Rnd4 Javon Foster
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Javon Foster well ahead of where he belonged. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick141 Rnd5 DJ James
A cornerback of that caliber at slot 141 is the definition of value, full stop. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick223 Rnd7 Maurice Smith
A real head-scratcher, Maurice Smith in the Round 7 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
