The phones sank the 49ers this weekend: C-. The move everyone will second-guess came early. The 49ers reached some 37 spots for Bud Clark, and value like that does not grow back. For now it grades a C-, with the swing picks left to settle the rest.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The Sarratt value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
Hit on Monroe Freeling and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.
Pick Analysis
Pick27
Rnd1
Monroe Freeling
A wild overpay on Monroe Freeling in slot 27, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick49
Rnd2
Dani Dennis-Sutton
This one needs a full-page explanation: Dani Dennis-Sutton in Round 2, Pick 17, miles early. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick58
Rnd2
Elijah Sarratt
A slide stopped in pick 58, with Elijah Sarratt worth more than the price. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick92
Rnd3
Daylen Everette
Daylen Everette in the Round 3 slot is fair value, right on his grade. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick127
Rnd4
Skyler Gill-Howard
Skyler Gill-Howard at the 127th overall pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick133
Rnd4
Mike Washington Jr.
Mike Washington Jr. at No. 133 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick138
Rnd4
Sam Roush
Sam Roush in the 138th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick171
Rnd5
Bud Clark
Bud Clark in slot 171 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A minor need, but a need all the same.
