Draft Grade — Browns
Overall D
ValueC+ NeedB+ TradesF FutureB
McCarthy is the plan now, and the Browns grade out a D.

You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Browns did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. The math is unkind, and the D follows.

They are betting Laube proves the room right and everyone else wrong. Whatever J.J. McCarthy becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. Spending an early pick on linebacker with tight end open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.

For all the activity, tight end went untouched, which is hard to explain. However the rest shakes out, Abrams-Draine at that price is a win they earned.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and tight end is still a hole.

Pick Analysis
Pick9 Rnd1 J.J. McCarthy
In pick 9 they get a franchise quarterback, though the board says they badly overpaid. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick33 Rnd2 Brian Thomas Jr.
A tidy bit of business in the 33rd pick, where Brian Thomas Jr. graded well above the range. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick43 Rnd2 Payton Wilson
They did well to land Payton Wilson in pick No. 43, just ahead of his grade. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick57 Rnd2 Xavier Legette
Fair-plus on Xavier Legette, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick58 Rnd2 T'Vondre Sweat
They took T'Vondre Sweat at par in the 58th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick65 Rnd3 T.J. Tampa
T.J. Tampa at Round 3, Pick 1 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick75 Rnd3 Marshawn Kneeland
Marshawn Kneeland at No. 75 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick89 Rnd3 Patrick Paul
Patrick Paul at the Round 3 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick105 Rnd4 Cole Bishop
The board had Cole Bishop higher than Round 4, Pick 5, and the safety fell to them anyway. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick107 Rnd4 Braelon Allen
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Braelon Allen. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick110 Rnd4 Zak Zinter
By-the-book stuff, Zak Zinter at the 110th pick squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick118 Rnd4 Kris Abrams-Draine
They barely believed it either: Kris Abrams-Draine still on the board at the 118th overall pick. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick122 Rnd4 Brennan Jackson
No edge and no loss on Brennan Jackson in pick No. 122; it is a wash and a sensible one. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick136 Rnd4 Tommy Eichenberg
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Tommy Eichenberg at linebacker with tight end open.
Pick140 Rnd5 Myles Cole
The board had cheaper options than Myles Cole at slot 140, and it noticed. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick145 Rnd5 Dylan Laube
A wild overpay on Dylan Laube in pick 145, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick146 Rnd5 McKinnley Jackson
McKinnley Jackson at pick No. 146 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
