Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B-
ValueC+ NeedB TradesA- FutureC
A sensible, unshowy class lands the Patriots a B-.

The Jason Henderson selection is the head-turner. The Patriots reached 136 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.

That is a tight end worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want.

The trade work was a quiet net positive. On the needs board they went 7 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most.

Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Pick Analysis
Pick22 Rnd1 Colston Loveland
In pick 22 they get a matchup weapon at tight end at fair value.
Pick38 Rnd2 Matthew Golden
A straight-up fair deal on Matthew Golden at slot 38, value and slot in agreement. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick39 Rnd2 Jalon Walker
They will replay Jalon Walker at pick No. 39 for years; that is how good the value is. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick41 Rnd2 Donovan Ezeiruaku
Donovan Ezeiruaku in No. 41 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick69 Rnd3 Xavier Watts
A safety of that caliber at the 69th pick is the definition of value, full stop. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick77 Rnd3 Ozzy Trapilo
Ozzy Trapilo in the Round 3 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick89 Rnd3 Kyle Kennard
Value with a capital V on Kyle Kennard in slot 89, a genuine coup. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick105 Rnd4 Darius Alexander
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Darius Alexander well ahead of where he belonged. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick127 Rnd4 Emery Jones Jr.
Emery Jones Jr. at the Round 4 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick133 Rnd4 RJ Harvey
RJ Harvey in pick No. 133 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick136 Rnd4 Chase Lundt
A big swing on Chase Lundt at the 136th pick, well ahead of any board in the building. It fills a real need, too.
Pick145 Rnd5 Dont'e Thornton Jr.
A real head-scratcher, Dont'e Thornton Jr. in Round 5, Pick 6 is miles ahead of his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick176 Rnd5 Cobee Bryant
They went early on Cobee Bryant in No. 176, and the value did not follow. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick198 Rnd6 Jason Henderson
Jason Henderson at pick 198 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick219 Rnd7 Marcus Yarns
A wild overpay on Marcus Yarns in Round 7, Pick 1, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick222 Rnd7 Luke Lachey
They robbed the room for Luke Lachey here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick240 Rnd7 Zeek Biggers
Nothing to complain about; Zeek Biggers went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
