Draft Grade — Browns

FutureB-
Larceny in the 247th pick lands the Browns a B-, Chiles and all. Somebody in slot 247 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Browns sat still while Aidan Chiles, the No. 190 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up. The Thompson pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. Quarterback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
Good work on the whole, with tight end the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick2
Rnd1
Kadyn Proctor
In the 2nd overall pick they get a cornerstone up front. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick10
Rnd1
Peter Woods
In the Round 1 slot they get a bendy edge with upside at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick34
Rnd2
Mikail Kamara
A straight-up fair deal on Mikail Kamara at No. 34, value and slot in agreement. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick66
Rnd3
Zane Durant
A interior defensive lineman of that caliber at slot 66 is the definition of value, full stop. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick102
Rnd3
Justice Haynes
They went early on Justice Haynes in pick No. 102, and the value did not follow. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick147
Rnd5
Duce Robinson
Value with a capital V on Duce Robinson in pick 147, a genuine coup. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick215
Rnd6
Jalen Thompson
Jalen Thompson at Round 6, Pick 39 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick221
Rnd7
Dijon Johnson
A quiet steal in the 221st pick: Dijon Johnson for less than the market said. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick224
Rnd7
Riley Mahlman
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Riley Mahlman at pick 224. The roster fit checks out.
Pick247
Rnd7
Aidan Chiles
The board fumbled Aidan Chiles all the way to Round 7, Pick 31, and they scooped it up. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
