Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall F
ValueC+ NeedB TradesF FutureD
The 49ers reached for Trigg and never recovered. Grade: F.

Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The 49ers spent pick 99 on Michael Trigg, a name the board had a full 37 spots lower. A F, plain and simple.

Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. The Jackson pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at quarterback. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

That is a cornerback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.

The verdict is harsh because the weekend was, and there is little to argue.

Pick Analysis
Pick30 Rnd1 Denzel Boston
In pick 30 they get a matchup problem out wide at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick49 Rnd2 Jonah Coleman
Jonah Coleman in Round 2, Pick 17 is fair value, right on his grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick56 Rnd2 Elijah Sarratt
Elijah Sarratt in the 56th pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick68 Rnd3 Brian Parker II
They left a pile of value on the table to take Brian Parker II this early at the Round 3 slot. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick78 Rnd3 Caleb Tiernan
Caleb Tiernan in the 78th overall pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick80 Rnd3 Drew Shelton
They jumped the gun on Drew Shelton, taking him earlier than his grade liked. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick88 Rnd3 Mikail Kamara
This one needs a full-page explanation: Mikail Kamara in pick 88, miles early. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick91 Rnd3 Anto Saka
Anto Saka in pick No. 91 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick94 Rnd3 Nicholas Singleton
No edge and no loss on Nicholas Singleton in Round 3, Pick 30; it is a wash and a sensible one. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick99 Rnd3 Michael Trigg
They reached a country mile for Michael Trigg at slot 99, and the board is aghast. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick106 Rnd4 Parker Brailsford
A real head-scratcher, Parker Brailsford in the 106th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick107 Rnd4 Harold Perkins Jr.
Harold Perkins Jr. at the Round 4 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick121 Rnd4 D'Angelo Ponds
A tidy little value on D'Angelo Ponds in No. 121, a step better than break-even. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick124 Rnd4 Jalon Kilgore
They did well to land Jalon Kilgore in the 124th overall pick, just ahead of his grade. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick130 Rnd4 DeMonte Capehart
DeMonte Capehart in Round 4, Pick 30 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick133 Rnd4 J.C. Davis
They went early on J.C. Davis in slot 133, and the value did not follow. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick135 Rnd4 Domani Jackson
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending No. 135 on Domani Jackson with quarterback unsolved.
Pick139 Rnd4 Iapani Laloulu
They talked themselves into Iapani Laloulu at the 139th pick, and the board did not agree. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick140 Rnd4 Tao Johnson
A want over a need in the 140th overall pick: Tao Johnson adds a safety while quarterback keeps waiting.
Pick167 Rnd5 Aaron Graves
No drama and no debate, Aaron Graves went about where he belonged in the Round 5 slot. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick242 Rnd7 Daevin Hobbs
They paid a round early for Daevin Hobbs in pick No. 242, more than the board wanted. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
