Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall

FutureB-
The phones sank the 49ers this weekend: D. There is conviction, and then there is this. The 49ers took Frank Gore Jr. a full 63 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D is the result.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. However the rest shakes out, McCaffrey at that price is a win they earned.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick Analysis
Pick5
Rnd1
Joe Alt
In the 5th overall pick they get a blindside protector. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick63
Rnd2
Edgerrin Cooper
Edgerrin Cooper slid further than he should have, and No. 63 is lovely value for the linebacker. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick94
Rnd3
Ben Sinnott
They liked Ben Sinnott enough to skip the value, taking him in slot 94. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick105
Rnd4
Johnny Wilson
Johnny Wilson in Round 4, Pick 5 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick110
Rnd4
Brenden Rice
They jumped the gun on Brenden Rice, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick124
Rnd4
Zak Zinter
Zak Zinter is a better player than pick No. 124 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick176
Rnd6
Luke McCaffrey
Somehow Luke McCaffrey was still sitting there in pick No. 176, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick201
Rnd6
Nathaniel Watson
Nathaniel Watson in pick 201 is fair value, right on his grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick205
Rnd6
Frank Gore Jr.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Frank Gore Jr.. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick212
Rnd6
Jaylan Ford
No edge and no loss on Jaylan Ford in the 212th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick236
Rnd7
Devin Leary
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Devin Leary well ahead of where he belonged. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick251
Rnd7
Steele Chambers
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Steele Chambers in slot 251, plain and simple. The roster fit checks out.
