Draft Grade — Texans

ValueB NeedB+ TradesF FutureC
Best value of the weekend goes to the Texans for Wohler: D.

You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Texans did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. Put together, it is a D.

Leaving offensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Wohler at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.

A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.

Pick Analysis
Pick21 Rnd1 Deone Walker
In No. 21 they get a run-stuffing presence up front at a price that makes it sweeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick23 Rnd1 Nic Scourton
In pick No. 23 they get a disruptor off the edge. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick53 Rnd2 TreVeyon Henderson
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 2 slot with a little surplus value in TreVeyon Henderson. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick85 Rnd3 Jay Higgins
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jay Higgins. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick117 Rnd4 Hunter Wohler
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Hunter Wohler in slot 117, plain and simple. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick149 Rnd5 Derrick Moore
Derrick Moore is a better player than the 149th overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick213 Rnd7 Savion Williams
Value with a capital V on Savion Williams in pick No. 213, a genuine coup. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
