Larceny in the 177th pick lands the 49ers a C+, Smith and all. Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the 49ers were there to profit. Brashard Smith, the No. 99 name on the board, should have been long gone before No. 177.
They will need Griffith to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The trades bled value they could not afford to lose.
The Winston Jr. pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with quarterback and edge rusher still on the board. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
It grades out a shrug today, with plenty of room to move either way.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Wyatt Milum
In pick No. 11 they get a long-term starter on the line. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick44
Rnd2
Nick Emmanwori
Somehow Nick Emmanwori was still sitting there in pick 44, and they pounced on premier safety value. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick75
Rnd3
Darien Porter
Darien Porter at slot 75 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick99
Rnd3
Jake Majors
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Jake Majors at the Round 3 slot. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick102
Rnd4
Jack Bech
The board had Jack Bech higher than the 102nd overall pick, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick111
Rnd4
Mason Taylor
Mason Taylor at No. 111 is money in the bank, a tight end taken below his worth. It fills a real need, too.
Pick137
Rnd4
Kevin Winston Jr.
A want over a need in the 137th pick: Kevin Winston Jr. adds a safety while quarterback and edge rusher keeps waiting.
Pick158
Rnd5
Hayden Conner
Hayden Conner at Round 5, Pick 21 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick163
Rnd5
Chris Paul Jr.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Chris Paul Jr. in slot 163, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick177
Rnd6
Brashard Smith
A running back of that caliber at Round 6, Pick 2 is the definition of value, full stop. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick185
Rnd6
Cody Simon
Cody Simon at No. 185 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The roster fit checks out.
Pick186
Rnd6
Ollie Gordon II
They robbed the room for Ollie Gordon II here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick226
Rnd7
Thor Griffith
Thor Griffith at pick No. 226 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick230
Rnd7
Jack Kiser
Jack Kiser in the 230th overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick237
Rnd7
Jonah Monheim
Steal is underselling it; Jonah Monheim at the 237th pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick249
Rnd7
Joey Slackman
Joey Slackman in the Round 7 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick255
Rnd7
Elijhah Badger
They took Elijhah Badger at par in No. 255, which is nothing to complain about. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
