Draft Grade — Lions
Overall B-
ValueC NeedA- TradesB- FutureB-
The Lions checked most of the boxes and earned a B-.

The Jaleel Johnson pick is the one that will follow the Lions into the fall. They took him 84 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so.

They will regret leaving linebacker for another day if the season turns on it. The roster is better shaped than it was, with cornerback chief among the fixes.

Good work on the whole, with linebacker the one box left unchecked.

Pick Analysis
Pick21 Rnd1 Zabien Brown
A wild overpay on Zabien Brown in the Round 1 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick52 Rnd2 Jelani McDonald
Jelani McDonald at the 52nd pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick85 Rnd3 Jyaire Hill
A conviction pick on Jyaire Hill at No. 85 that the board grades a round light. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick122 Rnd4 Amare Ferrell
They paid sticker price for Amare Ferrell in slot 122, and that is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick158 Rnd5 Jermaine Mathews Jr.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jermaine Mathews Jr. this early at Round 5, Pick 21. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick200 Rnd6 Jaleel Johnson
Jaleel Johnson in the 200th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick216 Rnd6 Earnest Greene III
A straight-up fair deal on Earnest Greene III at pick 216, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick242 Rnd7 Darius Taylor
They reached a country mile for Darius Taylor at Round 7, Pick 21, and the board is aghast. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick254 Rnd7 Brett Norfleet
They went early on Brett Norfleet in the 254th overall pick, and the value did not follow. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
