Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall D
ValueB+ NeedB+ TradesF FutureD
Larceny in pick No. 211 lands the Cowboys a D, Simon and all.

You build a draft on nights like this. Cody Simon had no business being available in Round 6, Pick 33, and the Cowboys did the only sane thing and turned in the card.

They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. The Grant reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.

The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.

In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.

Pick Analysis
Pick14 Rnd1 Luther Burden III
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Luther Burden III. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick33 Rnd2 Tyler Warren
Tyler Warren at Round 2, Pick 1 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick39 Rnd2 Walter Nolen
Taking Walter Nolen in pick 39 is close to grand larceny; an interior defensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. The roster fit checks out.
Pick44 Rnd2 Tyler Booker
Tyler Booker at the 44th pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick67 Rnd3 Maxwell Hairston
They jumped the gun on Maxwell Hairston, taking him earlier than his grade liked. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick72 Rnd3 Charles Grant
They left a pile of value on the table to take Charles Grant this early at slot 72. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick76 Rnd3 Omarion Hampton
Omarion Hampton in pick No. 76 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick150 Rnd5 Darius Alexander
Circle this one: Darius Alexander at the 150th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. It fills a real need, too.
Pick170 Rnd5 Smael Mondon Jr.
They will replay Smael Mondon Jr. at slot 170 for years; that is how good the value is. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick172 Rnd5 Cam Skattebo
A running back of that caliber at the Round 5 slot is the definition of value, full stop. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick174 Rnd5 Brashard Smith
Steal is underselling it; Brashard Smith at No. 174 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick190 Rnd6 JJ Pegues
JJ Pegues at the 190th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick211 Rnd6 Cody Simon
Cody Simon at pick 211 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick249 Rnd7 Alex Mastromanno
You do not let a specialist like Alex Mastromanno reach pick No. 249 and blink. They did not. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
