FutureB-
A solid, sensible weekend for the Patriots: B. The pick that carries the class is Mario Craver, a wide receiver the Patriots were happy to stop sliding in the Round 3 slot. Patience, rewarded. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. The cost of the Thompson reach is exactly the players who went right after him.
On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most. The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
Yhonzae Pierre
In No. 30 they get a problem off the edge, outstanding value to boot. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick62
Rnd2
Nick Marsh
Nick Marsh at pick No. 62 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick94
Rnd3
Mario Craver
Mario Craver slipping to the Round 3 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick125
Rnd4
Marcus Neal Jr.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Marcus Neal Jr. at pick 125. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick130
Rnd4
Myles Graham
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Myles Graham in the 130th overall pick. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick189
Rnd6
Jalen Thompson
They paid a round early for Jalen Thompson in slot 189, more than the board wanted. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick200
Rnd6
Coen Echols
Coen Echols slid further than he should have, and pick No. 200 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick207
Rnd6
Mason Curtis
A tidy bit of business in slot 207, where Mason Curtis graded well above the range. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick212
Rnd6
Jaden Platt
By-the-book stuff, Jaden Platt at No. 212 squarely in line with his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
Pick215
Rnd6
Malachi Breland
They read the board right and Malachi Breland was the payoff at Round 6, Pick 36. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick225
Rnd7
Elinneus Davis
No drama and no debate, Elinneus Davis went about where he belonged in the 225th pick. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick246
Rnd7
Jay'Vion Cole
Jay'Vion Cole at the Round 7 slot is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
