Draft Grade — Lions
Overall D-
ValueB- NeedB+ TradesF FutureD
A costly weekend of dealing drags the Lions to a D-.

The Lions lost the trade war and it was not close, handing partners the better end again and again.

Leaving linebacker unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The cost of the Tupuola-Fetui reach is exactly the players who went right after him. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.

The Worthy value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.

It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.

Pick Analysis
Pick24 Rnd1 Cooper DeJean
In pick 24 they get a press-man option on the boundary at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick40 Rnd2 Xavier Legette
They took Xavier Legette at par in slot 40, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick56 Rnd2 Braden Fiske
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Braden Fiske. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick61 Rnd2 Kingsley Suamataia
No drama and no debate, Kingsley Suamataia went about where he belonged in the 61st overall pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick67 Rnd3 Xavier Worthy
Xavier Worthy at Round 3, Pick 3 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It fills a real need, too.
Pick73 Rnd3 Mike Sainristil
By-the-book stuff, Mike Sainristil at pick No. 73 squarely in line with his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick164 Rnd5 Sione Vaki
Sione Vaki in the 164th pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick201 Rnd6 Julian Pearl
No edge and no loss on Julian Pearl in the Round 6 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick205 Rnd6 Zion Tupuola-Fetui
Zion Tupuola-Fetui at the 205th overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
