Best value of the weekend goes to the Bears for Smith: B. The board owed the Bears one, and it paid up: Ainias Smith, the No. 158 name on the board, sitting there at slot 183 like a gift left on the doorstep. The bottom line is a respectable B.
They will answer for taking defensive back early while interior defensive lineman, cornerback and other spots went begging. The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the interior defensive lineman spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Marvin Harrison Jr.
In the 1st overall pick they get a matchup problem out wide. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick26
Rnd1
Kamren Kinchens
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Kamren Kinchens. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick58
Rnd2
Brandon Dorlus
Nothing to complain about; Brandon Dorlus went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick69
Rnd3
Sedrick Van Pran
A clean, defensible pick in slot 69 with a little surplus value in Sedrick Van Pran. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick96
Rnd3
Max Melton
They bypassed pressing needs at interior defensive lineman, cornerback and other spots to take Max Melton, a defensive back that was not the priority.
Pick105
Rnd4
Will Shipley
Will Shipley in No. 105 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick132
Rnd4
Donovan Jackson
Donovan Jackson at pick No. 132 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. The roster fit checks out.
Pick183
Rnd6
Ainias Smith
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Ainias Smith in the 183rd pick, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick226
Rnd7
Benjamin Yurosek
A tidy little value on Benjamin Yurosek in the 226th overall pick, a step better than break-even. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
