FutureB-
No fireworks, just a tidy B for the Chiefs. The tape said wait; the Chiefs did not. Jordan Whittington went at slot 188, a good 60 picks before the board was ready.
With quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on cornerback is the choice that costs them. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The McCaffrey steal is the beam this whole class leans on.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick Analysis
Pick58
Rnd2
Xavier Worthy
Xavier Worthy at pick No. 58 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick66
Rnd3
Devontez Walker
By-the-book stuff, Devontez Walker at the 66th pick squarely in line with his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick71
Rnd3
Patrick Paul
No drama and no debate, Patrick Paul went about where he belonged in pick 71. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick86
Rnd3
Dominick Puni
A straight-up fair deal on Dominick Puni at the Round 3 slot, value and slot in agreement. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick88
Rnd3
Max Melton
A quiet steal in the 88th overall pick: Max Melton for less than the market said. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick95
Rnd3
Cam Hart
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots to take Cam Hart, a cornerback that was not the priority.
Pick100
Rnd3
Will Shipley
Will Shipley in pick 100 is fair value, right on his grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick126
Rnd4
Elijah Jones
A curious use of Round 4, Pick 26. Quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots needed the pick; a cornerback in Elijah Jones did not.
Pick132
Rnd4
Jarrian Jones
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending slot 132 on Jarrian Jones with quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots unsolved.
Pick162
Rnd5
Luke McCaffrey
They let Luke McCaffrey come to them and pounced at No. 162. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick169
Rnd5
Tip Reiman
They jumped the gun on Tip Reiman, taking him earlier than his grade liked. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick188
Rnd6
Jordan Whittington
Jordan Whittington in the 188th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick226
Rnd7
Frank Gore Jr.
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Frank Gore Jr.. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
