Draft Grade — Patriots

The Patriots let Walley fall into their laps, and walked away with a B.

Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Patriots were there to profit. Justin Walley, the No. 199 name on the board, should have been long gone before the Round 7 slot. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.

The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer. They went 4 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

They came away with juice, if not much beef up front.

Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.

Pick Analysis
Pick3 Rnd1 Marvin Harrison Jr.
In the 3rd pick they get a go-to option on the outside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick34 Rnd2 Kool-Aid McKinstry
Kool-Aid McKinstry at pick 34 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick68 Rnd3 Kiran Amegadjie
They read the board right and Kiran Amegadjie was the payoff at No. 68. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick103 Rnd4 Blake Fisher
A straight-up fair deal on Blake Fisher at the 103rd overall pick, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick139 Rnd5 Ben Sinnott
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Ben Sinnott. The roster fit checks out.
Pick182 Rnd6 Keith Randolph Jr.
They robbed the room for Keith Randolph Jr. here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick224 Rnd7 Justin Walley
They barely believed it either: Justin Walley still on the board at pick No. 224. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
