The phones sank the Chiefs this weekend: D-. There is reaching, and then there is Nolan Rucci at Round 6, Pick 6. The Chiefs jumped the board by 55 and dared it to prove them wrong.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. They will answer for taking cornerback early while quarterback and interior defensive lineman went begging. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want.
Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 6 of 8 of the wish list covered.
In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.
Pick Analysis
Pick15
Rnd1
Mansoor Delane
In pick 15 they get a sticky cover corner at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
Pick44
Rnd2
Sonny Styles
They paid sticker price for Sonny Styles in No. 44, and that is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick46
Rnd2
Ja'Kobi Lane
Ja'Kobi Lane in the Round 2 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick60
Rnd2
Colton Hood
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback and interior defensive lineman to take Colton Hood, a cornerback that was not the priority.
Pick75
Rnd3
Eli Stowers
Eli Stowers at the 75th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick79
Rnd3
Ian Strong
A tidy little value on Ian Strong in slot 79, a step better than break-even. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick81
Rnd3
Nicholas Singleton
A premium they did not need to pay, Nicholas Singleton a notch or two before his time. It fills a real need, too.
Pick110
Rnd4
Boubacar Traore
They left a pile of value on the table to take Boubacar Traore this early at No. 110. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick116
Rnd4
Akheem Mesidor
Akheem Mesidor in the 116th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick155
Rnd5
Xavier Nwankpa
Xavier Nwankpa in pick 155 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick186
Rnd6
Nolan Rucci
A big swing on Nolan Rucci at the Round 6 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
