Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B
ValueB+ NeedB+ TradesB- FutureB-
The Patriots cashed the board's mistake on Johnson: B.

The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Patriots watched Greg Johnson slide 64 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. No fireworks, but a solid B.

The McCray reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. They will regret leaving running back for another day if the season turns on it.

They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.

Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.

Pick Analysis
Pick30 Rnd1 Yhonzae Pierre
In pick 30 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare at a price that makes it sweeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick62 Rnd2 A'Mauri Washington
The board fumbled A'Mauri Washington all the way to pick No. 62, and they scooped it up. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick94 Rnd3 Keon Sabb
You do not let a safety like Keon Sabb reach No. 94 and blink. They did not. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick125 Rnd4 Mike Matthews
Mike Matthews at the 125th overall pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick130 Rnd4 Greg Johnson
Somehow Greg Johnson was still sitting there in Round 4, Pick 30, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick168 Rnd5 Nicholas Rodriguez
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Nicholas Rodriguez in slot 168, plain and simple. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick189 Rnd6 Blake Frazier
Blake Frazier at the Round 6 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. The roster fit checks out.
Pick200 Rnd6 LJ McCray
They reached into another round for LJ McCray, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick207 Rnd6 C.J. Fite
C.J. Fite at No. 207 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick209 Rnd6 Edrees Farooq
Edrees Farooq in slot 209 is fair value, right on his grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick246 Rnd7 John Mateer
By-the-book stuff, John Mateer at Round 7, Pick 30 squarely in line with his ranking. A need, and now a little less of one.
