FutureA+
McCarthy is the Cowboys' new face under center. Grade: D. You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Cowboys did exactly that with DeMonte Capehart in pick 245. The math is unkind, and the D follows.
They have staked the next five years on J.J. McCarthy, which is the only story that really matters here. The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Lovett.
A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.
Pick Analysis
Pick24
Rnd1
Jordan Morgan
In Round 1, Pick 24 they get a long-term starter on the line at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick26
Rnd1
J.J. McCarthy
In slot 26 they get their guy under center for the next decade, though the board says they badly overpaid. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick36
Rnd2
Ja'Tavion Sanders
Ja'Tavion Sanders at No. 36 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick56
Rnd2
Jackson Powers-Johnson
By-the-book stuff, Jackson Powers-Johnson at pick No. 56 squarely in line with his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick58
Rnd2
Jonathon Brooks
No edge and no loss on Jonathon Brooks in the 58th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. The roster fit checks out.
Pick67
Rnd3
Payton Wilson
They took Payton Wilson at par in the 67th pick, which is nothing to complain about. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick87
Rnd3
Christian Mahogany
Christian Mahogany at pick No. 87 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick100
Rnd3
Mike Sainristil
A quiet steal in the 100th pick: Mike Sainristil for less than the market said. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick124
Rnd4
Tommy Eichenberg
Tommy Eichenberg at pick 124 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick174
Rnd5
Kitan Oladapo
Kitan Oladapo in Round 5, Pick 38 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick181
Rnd6
Josh Proctor
A big swing on Josh Proctor at No. 181, well ahead of any board in the building. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick212
Rnd6
Dominic Lovett
A tidy bit of business in slot 212, where Dominic Lovett graded well above the range. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick223
Rnd7
Jonah Monheim
Jonah Monheim at the 223rd overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick239
Rnd7
Jase McClellan
Fair-plus on Jase McClellan, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick245
Rnd7
DeMonte Capehart
DeMonte Capehart at the 245th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
