The Bengals cashed the board's mistake on Driskell: D-. The trade table was where it all came apart. The Bengals shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D- is the result.
If Johnson pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up. That Driskell pick is the receipt they will wave around later.
The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.
A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.
Pick Analysis
Pick18
Rnd1
Bralen Trice
No drama and no debate, Bralen Trice went about where he belonged in the 18th overall pick. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick65
Rnd3
Johnny Wilson
Johnny Wilson at No. 65 is a conviction pick that outran the value. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick80
Rnd3
Christian Mahogany
Christian Mahogany at Round 3, Pick 16 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick110
Rnd4
Beau Brade
They took Beau Brade at par in pick No. 110, which is nothing to complain about. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick113
Rnd4
Cedric Gray
They paid a round early for Cedric Gray in slot 113, more than the board wanted. The roster fit checks out.
Pick115
Rnd4
Dillon Johnson
Dillon Johnson in the Round 4 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick138
Rnd5
Joe Milton III
A big swing on Joe Milton III at pick No. 138, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick151
Rnd5
Keith Randolph Jr.
Keith Randolph Jr. in pick 151 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick164
Rnd5
Nehemiah Pritchett
Nehemiah Pritchett in Round 5, Pick 28 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick173
Rnd5
Chau Smith-Wade
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Chau Smith-Wade at No. 173 is the proof. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick204
Rnd6
Christian Jones
They read the board right and Christian Jones was the payoff at the 204th overall pick. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick210
Rnd6
Ethan Driskell
The board fumbled Ethan Driskell all the way to slot 210, and they scooped it up. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
