Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B
ValueC+ NeedB TradesB- FutureA-
No fireworks, just a tidy B for the 49ers.

You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The 49ers did exactly that with Frank Gore Jr. in the 165th pick. The bottom line is a respectable B.

The James pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. The James pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with edge rusher still on the board.

Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.

Pick Analysis
Pick31 Rnd1 Quinyon Mitchell
In pick No. 31 they get a lockdown presence outside at a price that makes it sweeter. More want than need.
Pick81 Rnd3 Kingsley Suamataia
They read the board right and Kingsley Suamataia was the payoff at Round 3, Pick 17. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick108 Rnd4 Dominick Puni
Taking Dominick Puni in the 108th overall pick is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick124 Rnd4 DJ James
They bypassed pressing needs at edge rusher to take DJ James, a cornerback that was not the priority.
Pick132 Rnd4 Brenden Rice
Brenden Rice is a better player than No. 132 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick135 Rnd4 Luke McCaffrey
They liked Luke McCaffrey enough to skip the value, taking him in the 135th pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick165 Rnd5 Frank Gore Jr.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Frank Gore Jr. well ahead of where he belonged. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick176 Rnd6 Sataoa Laumea
Value with a capital V on Sataoa Laumea in pick 176, a genuine coup. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick179 Rnd6 JD Bertrand
JD Bertrand at the 179th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick211 Rnd6 Myles Murphy
This one needs a full-page explanation: Myles Murphy in Round 6, Pick 36, miles early. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick215 Rnd6 Josh Proctor
Josh Proctor slipping to the Round 6 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick228 Rnd7 Sam Hartman
A big swing on Sam Hartman at pick No. 228, well ahead of any board in the building. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick235 Rnd7 David Ugwoegbu
They left a pile of value on the table to take David Ugwoegbu this early at the 235th overall pick. It fits a board better than it fits this team.
Pick248 Rnd7 Zion Logue
Zion Logue in No. 248 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick251 Rnd7 Brevyn Spann-Ford
They paid a round early for Brevyn Spann-Ford in No. 251, more than the board wanted. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
