FutureA-
The Colts kept it disciplined and banked a B. Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Colts spent slot 218 on Steele Chambers, a name most had 37 spots down the list. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.
Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. They will answer for taking cornerback early while quarterback, tight end and other spots went begging. The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick Analysis
Pick35
Rnd2
Adonai Mitchell
A reasonable price with a little left over, Adonai Mitchell in Round 2, Pick 3. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick46
Rnd2
Graham Barton
No drama and no debate, Graham Barton went about where he belonged in slot 46. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick71
Rnd3
Christian Mahogany
Christian Mahogany in pick No. 71 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick82
Rnd3
Matt Goncalves
They reached a country mile for Matt Goncalves at the 82nd overall pick, and the board is aghast. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick93
Rnd3
Ainias Smith
This one needs a full-page explanation: Ainias Smith in the 93rd pick, miles early. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick118
Rnd4
DJ James
Fair-plus on DJ James, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick124
Rnd4
Kris Abrams-Draine
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Kris Abrams-Draine at cornerback with quarterback, tight end and other spots open.
Pick157
Rnd5
Cedric Johnson
Cedric Johnson at the 157th overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick161
Rnd5
Grayson Murphy
A premium they did not need to pay, Grayson Murphy a notch or two before his time. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick193
Rnd6
Michael Barrett
Michael Barrett in slot 193 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The roster fit checks out.
Pick218
Rnd6
Steele Chambers
Steele Chambers at No. 218 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick226
Rnd7
Trente Jones
A big swing on Trente Jones at the Round 7 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick232
Rnd7
Trevor Keegan
A real head-scratcher, Trevor Keegan in pick 232 is miles ahead of his ranking. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick236
Rnd7
Zakhari Franklin
They talked themselves into Zakhari Franklin at pick No. 236, and the board did not agree. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick239
Rnd7
Jase McClellan
No edge and no loss on Jase McClellan in the Round 7 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
