For all the boxes ticked, the 49ers skipped the loudest one: interior defensive lineman is exactly as bare as it was. The bottom line is a respectable B-.

The Raridon pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. If Lomu pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.

Job largely done: offensive lineman settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered. The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick27 Rnd1 Caleb Lomu
In the 27th overall pick they get an anchor for the offensive line, even if it was a touch early. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick58 Rnd2 Gennings Dunker
Gennings Dunker in pick No. 58 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick92 Rnd3 Genesis Smith
A clean, defensible pick in the 92nd pick with a little surplus value in Genesis Smith. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick127 Rnd4 Eric Rivers
No drama and no debate, Eric Rivers went about where he belonged in the Round 4 slot. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick133 Rnd4 Mike Washington Jr.
They paid sticker price for Mike Washington Jr. in No. 133, and that is fine. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick138 Rnd4 Eli Raridon
Eli Raridon slid further than he should have, and pick 138 is lovely value for the tight end. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.

Red Murdock in slot 171 is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
