The tape said wait; the 49ers did not. Bryce Boettcher went at the Round 4 slot, a good 57 picks before the board was ready.

They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. The Jackson pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with quarterback still on the board.

That Haulcy pick is the receipt they will wave around later. It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.

In the end, a class that has to defy its grades just to matter.
