Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B-
ValueB- NeedB TradesB- FutureB-
No fireworks, just a tidy B- for the Patriots.

Of all the ways to open, the Patriots chose the head-scratcher, spending the 106th pick on Smael Mondon Jr. with edge rusher, safety and other spots still wide open. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.

The Walker pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Watson has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.

The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.

Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.

Pick Analysis
Pick4 Rnd1 Will Campbell
They paid sticker price for Will Campbell in No. 4, and that is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick38 Rnd2 Jalon Walker
Jalon Walker in the Round 2 slot is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick69 Rnd3 Isaiah Bond
They took Isaiah Bond at par in slot 69, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick77 Rnd3 Ozzy Trapilo
Ozzy Trapilo at the 77th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick106 Rnd4 Smael Mondon Jr.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose linebacker. Smael Mondon Jr. in Round 4, Pick 4 leaves edge rusher, safety and other spots for later.
Pick144 Rnd5 Hollin Pierce
A reasonable price with a little left over, Hollin Pierce in No. 144. It fills a real need, too.
Pick171 Rnd5 Dont'e Thornton Jr.
They paid up for Dont'e Thornton Jr. at pick 171 when waiting would have done the job. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick220 Rnd7 Desmond Watson
A reach on Desmond Watson in the 220th overall pick; the board had better options right there. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick238 Rnd7 Cam Jackson
A straight-up fair deal on Cam Jackson at pick No. 238, value and slot in agreement. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
