Best value of the weekend goes to the Cardinals for Jones: A-. Somebody in No. 226 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Cardinals sat still while Trente Jones, the No. 194 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
The Cardinals indulged a want in Solomon while a need in quarterback and tight end stayed open.
Bottom line, they did the job about as well as it can be done.
Pick Analysis
Pick15
Rnd1
Jer'Zhan Newton
In the Round 1 slot they get a wrecking ball inside at fair value.
Pick27
Rnd1
Graham Barton
In slot 27 they get protection for the quarterback. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick35
Rnd2
Xavier Legette
They took Xavier Legette at par in pick No. 35, which is nothing to complain about. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick71
Rnd3
Sedrick Van Pran
No drama and no debate, Sedrick Van Pran went about where he belonged in the 71st overall pick. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick74
Rnd3
Mike Sainristil
Mike Sainristil in the 74th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick77
Rnd3
Brandon Dorlus
No edge and no loss on Brandon Dorlus in No. 77; it is a wash and a sensible one. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick82
Rnd3
Marshawn Kneeland
Marshawn Kneeland at pick 82 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick104
Rnd4
Zak Zinter
Zak Zinter in Round 4, Pick 4 is fair value, right on his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick106
Rnd4
Mekhi Wingo
By-the-book stuff, Mekhi Wingo at pick No. 106 squarely in line with his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
Pick112
Rnd4
Javon Solomon
Of all the spots to shop, they chose OLB-EDGE. Javon Solomon in the 112th pick leaves quarterback and tight end for later.
Pick138
Rnd5
Isaac Guerendo
Isaac Guerendo is a better player than Round 5, Pick 2 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick144
Rnd5
Jarrian Jones
Jarrian Jones at slot 144 is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick160
Rnd5
Jacob Cowing
The board had Jacob Cowing higher than No. 160, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick162
Rnd5
Tyrone Tracy Jr.
Tyrone Tracy Jr. in pick 162 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick163
Rnd5
Kitan Oladapo
A tidy bit of business in the 163rd overall pick, where Kitan Oladapo graded well above the range. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick186
Rnd6
Ty'Ron Hopper
Ty'Ron Hopper at the Round 6 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick197
Rnd6
Kamal Hadden
You do not let a cornerback like Kamal Hadden reach the Round 6 slot and blink. They did not. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick226
Rnd7
Trente Jones
Trente Jones at Round 7, Pick 6 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
