The Slovis reach set the tone, and the Bills never recovered: F. The war room fell hard for Kedon Slovis, and it showed at Round 7, Pick 29: 65 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas. A F, plain and simple.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. They will regret leaving tight end for another day if the season turns on it.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Jones. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
In the end, a class that has to defy its grades just to matter.
Pick Analysis
Pick36
Rnd2
Adonai Mitchell
Adonai Mitchell at pick No. 36 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick37
Rnd2
Ennis Rakestraw Jr.
No edge and no loss on Ennis Rakestraw Jr. in the 37th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick40
Rnd2
Chris Braswell
Chris Braswell at slot 40 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick60
Rnd2
Keon Coleman
You do not let a wide receiver like Keon Coleman reach No. 60 and blink. They did not. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick67
Rnd3
Leonard Taylor III
Leonard Taylor III at the Round 3 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick99
Rnd3
James Williams
James Williams in Round 3, Pick 36 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick129
Rnd4
Cedric Gray
Cedric Gray at pick No. 129 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick159
Rnd5
Kitan Oladapo
Nothing to complain about; Kitan Oladapo went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick214
Rnd6
Frank Gore Jr.
A premium they did not need to pay, Frank Gore Jr. a notch or two before his time. It fills a real need, too.
Pick215
Rnd6
Anim Dankwah
They reached into another round for Anim Dankwah, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick217
Rnd6
Andrew Raym
This one needs a full-page explanation: Andrew Raym in the 217th overall pick, miles early. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick218
Rnd6
Elijah Jones
Circle this one: Elijah Jones at the Round 6 slot is a fall that decides a draft. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick246
Rnd7
Zion Logue
A wild overpay on Zion Logue in pick 246, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick249
Rnd7
Kedon Slovis
Kedon Slovis at the 249th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
