Of all the ways to open, the 49ers chose the head-scratcher, spending Round 2, Pick 29 on Jelani McDonald with running back, quarterback and other spots still wide open. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.

They banked enough surplus on Weeks to cover a lot of smaller sins. They will regret leaving running back for another day if the season turns on it. The cost of the Sherrill reach is exactly the players who went right after him.

In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
