Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall B
ValueB- NeedB TradesA+ FutureB-
The Cowboys worked the phones like thieves and earned a B.

The Cowboys spent real capital to be 186 picks early on John Emery Jr., and the board is going to hold them to it.

The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. Getting Ford where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The Smith pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with cornerback, quarterback and other spots still on the board.

Leaving cornerback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the cornerback spot they never got to.

Pick Analysis
Pick29 Rnd1 Dallas Turner
Dallas Turner at the Round 1 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the edge rusher. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick58 Rnd2 Javon Foster
Javon Foster in the 58th pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick89 Rnd3 Maason Smith
A want over a need in pick No. 89: Maason Smith adds a DT-EDGE while cornerback, quarterback and other spots keeps waiting.
Pick92 Rnd3 Brenden Rice
Good price on Brenden Rice in pick 92, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick141 Rnd5 Darius Robinson
A straight-up fair deal on Darius Robinson at slot 141, value and slot in agreement. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick174 Rnd5 Ajani Cornelius
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Ajani Cornelius. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick212 Rnd6 Jaylan Ford
They barely believed it either: Jaylan Ford still on the board at the 212th pick. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick247 Rnd7 John Emery Jr.
John Emery Jr. in pick No. 247 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
